Are you a parent or carer with concerns about your child’s mental state or behaviour? It is important to be able to distinguish between “every day life” challenges and a mental health condition, as early intervention is crucial in improving outcomes for the child and reducing the recurrence or severity of mental health difficulties in later life. You can use tools such as the Child Mental Health Checklist from Beyond Blue or consider the following questions:
Does your child…
- Often feel sad or hopeless?
- Worry a lot?
- Fidget a lot or get easily distracted?
- Frequently fight with others or ignore rules?
- Misunderstand others’ feelings or refuse to share?
If you have answered yes to one or more of the above, you may wish to consider a referral for targeted psychological intervention. At Foresight we offer Family Therapy, individual Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for older children and adolescents, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for children and adolescents suffering from mental health difficulties or behavioural problems. Each type of therapy is designed to teach kids new skills and improve parent confidence. We see a range of adult and childhood difficulties including ADHD, depression, anxiety, bullying, phobias, body image concerns, and family functioning issues.
Most of the members of the team at Foresight Psychology have experience working with children, families and adolescents through their work at the Child Behaviour Research Centre at the University of Sydney or working with young people at headspace centres. Our psychologists will assess your child or teen’s individual needs and use the most appropriate evidence-based therapeutic approach to assist them.
